Every year in Australia skin cancers account for around 80% of all newly diagnosed cancers and the majority of those are due to exposure to the sun. While we all need a healthy dose of Vitamin D to help absorb calcium and promote bone growth, we also need to avoid the risk of skin cancers. No tan is worth cancer.
Which is why getting a spray tan is the ultimate way to have that gorgeous summer glow, without putting your health in danger.
What is a spray tan?
Spray tanning is a faux colour which sits on the top layer of your skin. Which means it’s vulnerable to anything that can come into contact with it. Therefore it’s essential you take certain steps before, during and after your spray tan appointment to get the most out of it.
Exfoliate, shave & moisturise the night before
We recommend that you exfoliate, shave and moisturise at least the night before, rather than a few hours before. By doing this, you will give your pores plenty of time to fully close before your appointment to ensure a smooth application of the tan.
Don’t arrive to your appointment with any oils on your skin
As spray tans are water-based, it means any oils on your skin will act as a barrier to the tan. Therefore it’s important you avoid using any perfumes, moisturisers or deodorants before your spray tan appointment, otherwise the tan won’t stick as well.
Wear dark, loose clothing to your appointment
As mentioned, your faux colour literally sits on the top layer of your skin and therefore it is susceptible to damage, especially right after application. Therefore we recommend you wear dark clothing to your appointment (to avoid stains on any of your lovely white clothes) and your clothing is loose.
Our ideal recommendation is to where a black t-shirt dress. Easy to put on without doing damage to your lovely new bronzed skin.
Try to avoid getting wet or sweating after your appointment
Your spray tanner will let you know how long to wait before you shower, so try to avoid sweating or getting wet within this timeframe too. Any wetness may reduce your tan.
Make sure you leave it on long enough
Which brings us to the point that you should make sure you stick to what the salon recommends in terms of leaving your tan on before washing it off to aid the longevity of the tan.
Here at Clarity Essential Wellness, we use Runway Room spray tans. We have a lighter 3 hour tan or a darker overnight tan.
When you are ready to wash it off. We recommend to use warm water, rather than scalding hot water, and to try to avoid using soaps. Once the water runs clear and you’re done, make sure to dab your skin to dry it, rather than rubbing yourself dry.
Moisturise, moisturise, moisturise
And our last and very important tip to help your spray tan last longer is to moisturise. Ensure you moisturise at least once a day for a longer lasting tan. And if possible, in addition to your normal moisturiser, use a moisturising body wash in the shower too.
So now that you know how to increase the lifespan of your beautiful tanned skin, why not make a spray tan appointment and we’ll get you glowing.
